What is Tomtis Method?

The Tomatis® Method

is a natural approach to neurosensory stimulation. Its listening programs change the music and voice in real time in order to capture the brain’s attention and to develop motor, emotional and cognitive skills. Developed by the French Doctor and Researcher, Alfred Tomatis, the Tomatis® Method relies on an advanced technology and the excellence of its trained professionals on how to use it.

Tomatis Method - for whom?

The Tomatis method is used in working with children who demonstrate:

speech disorders
voice disorders
dyslexia
autism
ADHD syndrome
school problems
difficulties in learning foreign languages
problems with concentration
difficulty coping with stress

Tomatis' research shows that one of the causes of many of the disorders listed above may be auditory attention disorders and auditory laterality disorders. These in turn - with the help of the method developed by him - can be effectively removed, or at least minimized.

The Tomatis method is used during pregnancy and has a positive effect on both the mother and the baby.

Contraindication to the Tomatis method is epilepsy, intensive pharmacotherapy (especially with psychotropic drugs), mental diseases, depression, and persistent, undiagnosed headaches. The decision then rests with the attending physician and the parents.
The basis for qualifying a child for Tomatis therapy is the presence of symptoms of auditory attention disorder confirmed by the test results.

What is Tomatis Training?

Training is about listening properly selected sound material by a device called "electronic ear", which is an ideal model of the human ear. Stimulation takes place through sounds of a specific, different frequency. These sounds are properly filtered. During training, which consists of several phases, individually selected sound material reaches the patient through the air and bone. During the session, you can play board and logic games and have fun.

The entire training consists of several phases from passive sound stimulation initiating the therapy to active participation of the patient through working with your own voice and using a microphone.

The number of stages of auditory training is selected individually and depends on the results of the auditory attention test, reported in the history of developmental problems, and the individual expectations of the child or parent.

Usually stage I is too 30 hours. exercises spread over a period of 15 days, two hours a day. However, depending on the individual conditions of the person subjected to auditory training, the time of one training session is set individually / from 30 minutes, 60, 90, /

The next stages / their length and dynamics of exercises / take place after a 1-2 month break. The program of the next stage is developed on the basis of the current auditory attention test, observation of changes after the previous stage and the current expectations reported.

An important stage of work is the active phase. This focuses, / as opposed to the passive stages consisting in listening to musical programs /, on working with words and verbalism. The emphasis is placed on working with one's own voice / via a microphone /, so that the program participant has the opportunity to listen to his own voice, tame it and accept it on an emotional level, modulate prosody / accent, intonation, melody of utterance and work with read, spoken and sung text. An important aspect is the speed of speech processing and the ability to control the correctness of speech, understanding the spoken content.

Auditory attention training is preceded by the auditory lateralization test - an examination with the use of an audiometer, which helps to determine the degree of auditory attention and the dominant ear. During the test, children are also interviewed about the course of pregnancy, the child's development in the first and subsequent years, and about illnesses.

Working with mother's voice is also a specific program, especially recommended for:

people on the autism spectrum
speech development disorders
emotional problems

Expected effects

Learning, auditory assimilation of information, communication with the environment are processes that are very natural for most of us and we do not pay attention to them until they run smoothly. However, according to statistics, for every tenth person, it is a serious problem that must be dealt with on a daily basis in the form of various difficulties / distortions of auditory attention, difficulties in understanding speech, pace of receiving verbal messages, lack of understanding of the content, confusion while listening to commands /. The above-mentioned difficulties may also be accompanied by incorrect processing of sensory information. We are talking then about auditory attention disorders, problems in the processing of verbal messages / in people without ear diseases /.

The ear is an organ that receives information and transmits it neuronally to the brain. It picks up sounds from the environment, but also sounds generated by our own voice.

Sound - the acoustic stimulus is converted into electrical stimuli and then transferred to the brain in the form of neural information for processing - acceptance, analysis and feedback.

The ear is innervated in the same way as the balance organ, hence it reacts to movement and participates in shaping the coordination of movements, balance and sense of rhythm. Therefore, the ear is extremely important for our daily functioning - we need it to talk, present arguments, obey commands, read, learn, remember or just to move around.

When communication between the ear and the brain is disrupted, our ability to interact with the outside world suffers. This often results in a loss of confidence, which in turn exacerbates communication and learning difficulties.

Sixty years ago, the French physician Alfred Tomatis developed a pedagogical approach that aims to stimulate the brain through the auditory system to restore an appropriate level of auditory attention. By specifically processing music and voice, the Tomatis® Method helps children and adults to improve their hearing and listening quality.

Auditory Processing:

Dyslexia: allows you to better cope with verbal processing, formulating oral and written statements; controlling one's own voice while speaking, influences the integration of visual-auditory functions, ear / right-sided laterality to listening - correct pace and correctness in understanding the content of the lecture, commands.

Autism: The Tomatis method, although not developed as a treatment for autism, also works in this area. In the case of approx. 60% of autistic children who underwent therapy with this method, positive results were obtained. Auditory training does not cure autism, however, in combination with other therapies, it can positively affect the quality of a child's life in terms of language, emotions and vestibulo-eye skills.

Learning foreign languages:

improvement of accent
faster assimilation of foreign languages ??- shorter learning time
more actively used words
better spontaneous understanding
improving the fluency of speech
faster and more durable memorization

Use in pregnancy:

shortening the time of childbirth
reducing the number of cesarean sections
reducing the number of perinatal problems
better well-being of mothers
newborns sleeping peacefully
better pace of development of the newborn
